He served three terms as the 3rd and 8th prime minister in the Third Hellenic Republic. His father, Georgios Papandreou , and his son, George Papandreou , have served as prime ministers of Greece. Papandreou left Greece for United States in his early 20s to escape the Metaxas' dictatorship and continue his studies to become a prominent academic economist.

He returned to Greece in under pressure from his father to prepare him as his successor. Papandreou was born on 5 February on the Greek island of Chios , [ 13 ] the son of Zofia Sofia Mineyko — and Greek liberal politician and future prime minister George Papandreou. His maternal grandfather was Polish - Lithuanian -born public figure Zygmunt Mineyko , and his maternal grandmother was Greek. Before university, he attended Athens College , a private school in Greece.

He attended the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens from until when, during the dictatorship led by Ioannis Metaxas , he was arrested for purported Trotskyism. Papandreou was married to Christina Rasia from to In , he entered into a relationship with University of Minnesota journalism student Margaret Chant.
