Ridley Scott 's critically acclaimed biographical crime film American Gangster is now streaming on Peacock. The film was loosely based on the life of real-life gangster Frank Lucas. American Gangster starred Denzel Washington as Lucas, the gangster who smuggles heroin into the United States via service planes returning from the Vietnam War.

Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton will be joined by a Hulk actor in an upcoming survival thriller from Netflix. The Ridley Scott-directed film enjoyed positive reviews from critics, who called it a gritty and entertaining throwback to the gangster genre. Not all response to American Gangster was positive, though.

Frank Lucas himself admitted that only a small portion of the film was actually true, and it was heavily dramatized. A federal judge who assisted in the arrest and trial of Lucas described the film as "one percent reality and ninety-nine percent Hollywood". Three former DEA agents also filed a lawsuit against Universal, claiming the film's events were fictionalized and defamed them and hundreds of other agents.

The lawsuit was later dismissed. The original film, released in , propelled Crowe to superstardom for his role as Maximus Decimus Meridius, the Roman general forced into slavery. James Gunn's Superman film is at the center of a lawsuit, with the Superman creator's estate suing Warner Bros. Discovery and DC over its release.

Twenty-four years later, a sequel to Gladiator hit theaters with Denzel Washington playing the scene-stealing role of Macrinus, a former slave who wishes to control Rome. The film, which starred Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal, tells the story of an exiled Roman prince who becomes a prisoner and fights for Washington's character of Macrinus.
